Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Valerie Mendez Mateo, Owner of VFit4You, located in Billerica, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Latina (Dominican), a certified personal trainer, and a health coach. I am dedicated to helping people get unstuck in the process of reaching their health goals and finding a balance based on their own individual lifestyle and culture.
Tell us about yourself
I was diagnosed with PCOS at 15 years old, partied a lot in my 20s, and did all the fad diets and video workouts but couldn't maintain a healthy lifestyle. My PCOS, anxiety/depression, back pain, and weight were worsening, and I realized I needed to make a sustainable change, especially if I wanted to have children. I became a personal trainer and began to help people that are stuck like I was. I am now a mom of three, who no longer takes medication for PCOS, has reduced anxiety and depression, is the most active and healthy I've ever been, and leading by example for my children. I am motivated by my past, and not wanting to go through those times again, and also motivated by my children, so they can live an active and healthier lifestyle than I did growing up.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping others reach their goals and making an impact on their life and overall health.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Accountability to yourself. It's easy to let things slip away if you do not have to be accountable to anyone; however, your business will not grow if you are not self-aware and hold yourself accountable for its successes and failures.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it! With no plan, you will figure it out as you go. Perfect does not exist.
- Do not be afraid to make changes and raise your prices.
- Social media is great, but there is more power in your network of friends and family, use it.
