Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristy Carabello, Founder of Vertige, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Vertige is a mobile vertigo-tracking app bringing balance back to vertigo sufferers. By tracking behavioral and environmental factors, users can identify trends in their vertigo episodes. Once tracked, weekly and bi-weekly reports can be shared with doctors and medical teams to help create a care plan.

Tell us about yourself

I was diagnosed with a vestibular disorder in 2017 that caused me debilitating vertigo. There are so many factors that can contribute to a vertigo episode that I started habit tracking on paper. I began to notice some trends, and when I wanted to start tracking from my phone, I realized there are a lot of different migraine-tracking apps but none specific to vertigo. I am so passionate about this business because I have been there and understand what my target market is going through and its pain points. My goal is to empower vertigo sufferers and bring balance back into their lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am so proud of the fact that I took a dark time in my life and transformed it into something positive that can help others. Compared to the general population, people who suffer from a vestibular disorder have increased rates of anxiety and depression. I see signs of this often in the FB groups that I'm in, where people are posting that they want to end their lives because of how helpless they feel. Being able to create an app that will help empower people to live their lives again, in some kind of normalcy, is the greatest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I'm a sole founder and doing everything myself, so there can be a lot of balls in the air at one time, but it's all worth it to know that you're helping people and making a difference.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! Things don't have to be perfect for you to begin.
  2. Put one foot in front of the other and accomplish one task at a time. It can be overwhelming at times, but it's a lot of little steps that add up to big accomplishments.
  3. Tell everyone what you're creating, and don't be afraid to ask for referrals! People will be excited for you and want to help.
