A Vintage Approach to Modern Photography - Veronica Vintage

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Renee Mutch, Owner of Veronica Vintage Portraiture Studio, located in Beaumont, Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a portrait and wedding photographer in the Edmonton, Alberta area. I specialize in smaller, more intimate weddings, connection, and true to life colours.

Tell us about yourself

I was always that kid with the camera growing up, and I knew that all I wanted to do was to create portraits of people. So I took the Photographic Technology Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and graduated in 2017. I photographed my first wedding only a few weeks later.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I recently submitted to a photography exhibition in Calgary and was accepted to be in the gallery! It was my first-ever submission, and I was so beyond excited to be accepted.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Working alone a lot of the time and trying to keep posing fresh and interesting. Keeping it new and interesting makes editing more fun.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always have a camera with you - you never know when inspiration can hit!
  2. Forget about being shy - yell out your car windows, talk to strangers, and meet new people. I found a grad session simply by pulling over and telling a high school grad and his parents how to fix his tassel on his grad cap and how to fix his sash. Let's be honest, I rolled down my window and yelled at them from across the parking lot, BUT STILL, it counts (lol).
  3. Be yourself in all your correspondences. If you're not a formal speaker, then don't write emails or blog posts that way. Transparency in all that you do makes you seem like more than a brand or a photographer - it makes you human.
