Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allie Egan, Founder, and CEO of Veracity, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

More than 83% of skin issues are caused by a hormonal imbalance, and more than 87% of women have imbalanced hormones. Veracity is bridging the gap between health care and skincare. Through the first-ever at-home hormone test, Veracity's Skin + Health Test offers insights into what's going on beneath the surface, how it's affecting your skin, and actionable solutions to look and feel your best.

Hormonal problems are so pervasive that it is more common than not to be suffering from one. Further, we encounter 85,000 hormone disruptors daily through our normal activities. Women especially have been implicitly and explicitly told to cover up their hormonal symptoms, and answers are almost impossible to come by. Our customers are women suffering from skin issues, hormonal issues, or just looking for a better way to know what they are doing is the best choice for their skin and health.

Tell us about yourself

The idea for Veracity came from my own experience suffering from some unsightly dry skin with no understanding of why or what to do about it, even from my dermatologist. It wasn't until almost four years later, when I was trying to start my family and going through infertility, that my hormones were tested and uncovered the root cause of both my fertility and my skin problem. It is my personal passion to bring personal health information to women in a way that will empower them to know they are making the right decisions for their skin and overall health and hopefully forgoing the painful trial and error period that so many of us have been through.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having an amazing team that believes in our mission has been my biggest accomplishment and biggest asset as a business owner. I'm really proud that Veracity is built by a diverse team of critical, creative, and forward thinkers who not only believe in the mission but live it every day. It makes me even more motivated and inspired for the future of the brand.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We're building something no one has ever built before, so there is no playbook. We do our best to strategize and plan, but we're constantly being met with new opportunities and challenges. Because of that, one of the most challenging things is staying focused on what you can and should be doing today to build the solution we know we can build tomorrow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's all about the people around you - having a strong support system and an amazing team who believe in the mission is critical (and invaluable).
  2. Listen to your customers.
  3. Know you will fail.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

"I was shocked to see my Skin + Health test results. I've suffered from hormonal acne practically my entire adult life. It makes me less confident in myself when I have a chin full of cystic, painful bumps- that I feel like everyone is staring and judging. I compare myself to other women- and have major clear chin envy. In the past, I've tried EVERYTHING, from topical over-the-counter to prescriptions. Little did I know, the source was way deeper than skin level. I've been prescribed hormone-blocking medicine when in fact - based on my results, it was the entirely wrong hormones. Now that I have the knowledge and the tools to understand my endocrine system, from levels to diet, I'm ready to make a change. Just one week in, and I've already noticed a significant difference." - Stephanie P (Veracity customer)
