Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martha Tabora, co-founder of Vegan Junkie, located in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Vegan Junkie is an elevated 100% plant-based burger food truck, which makes its own patties and sauce from scratch, locally and small business sourced with the highest quality ingredients. My customers are vegans and non-vegans who are looking to enjoy a healthier meal disguised in a burger form.

Tell us about yourself

We first started Vegan Junkie as my husband, and I transitioned into a plant-based lifestyle; having a Culinary background, we got a fire ignited to recreate the foods we all love.

My motivation comes from God giving me this wonderful gift of being able to transform food into a healthier approach that is sustainable and with no animals harmed. Seeing our clients come regularly or even if they’re new, seeing them enjoy it keeps us going as it confirms we are doing the right thing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Standing out as a unique concept, as we are the only ones in south Florida who make everything from scratch. And also still being able to provide our service even with all the challenges we have pivoted throughout the last two years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Taking up the challenges that come with life-like, for example, COVID, we used to be at a farmers market. After lockdown took place, we lost our place of business. We were so blessed to keep going until this day as the highest led us to popups with people willing to help us until we finally were able to transition to a food truck to keep our operations going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to have it consume your life for the next five or more years; make sure this is your passion, as that will keep you going.
  2. Have a partner who meets your eye to eye in everything. This will help with any conflict.
  3. Educate yourself daily with business management, marketing, HR, finances, etc. These can make or break your business. Make sure your concept has a place in the market.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Today is the day to start. Do not wait for the perfect time to start any entrepreneurial adventures; trust in yourself and keep going forward. Put your trust and faith in the highest to bless you in your journey.
