Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sehra Bindal, co-founder of Veg-in YYC, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Veg-In YYC Replanted is Indian Fusion Eatery. We are 100% Plant-Based. Our customers are anyone and everyone who wants to enjoy unique Indian-inspired dishes with a twist on what's normal.

Tell us about yourself

Working in this business at first was a way to share my family recipes with the world. I had spent my childhood learning from my Mother and the amazing home cooks in my life growing up. With all those recipes, I worked to create plant-based versions of each slowly while also creating healthier, lower-fat alternatives. Indian food doesn't have just to be curries and samosas; It can also be delicious burgers, wraps, and fusion poutines.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be creating a concept that not only has a goal of producing gourmet food with the least amount of waste as possible while still being able to support the less fortunate in the community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is not having enough hours in the day. Often times it seems with all the moving parts of the business, there still seems to be a laundry list of tasks consistently. But I love the daily challenge, knowing that all the hard work will only lead to more growth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to other people, but don't let negative comments discourage your dreams; know that there will always be someone who doesn't believe in your vision. That's okay, adjust and adapt to the challenge.
  2. Remember to take time for yourself. A business is 100% demanding your attention, time, and energy. That being said, you have to remember to take moments of self-care and spend time doing stuff you love because otherwise, you will burn out.
  3. Remember to give back to the community because they are your backbone and support system. As a business, there is so much to give back, don't be afraid to reach out and offer your support if you are privileged enough to give it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I wanted to create a legacy that could be passed on to my son and his family. A business that was not only focused on the food and the quality of the ingredients but also a pillar for community involvement. We have a lot of plans still and a lot of ideas that I can't wait to share with the world!
