Quintessential Salon Experience - Van Buren Gentlemen's Salon

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Deanna Goldstein, owner of Van Buren Gentlemen's Salon, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is Van Buren Gentlemen's Salon. We are an upscale barber salon, offering men's modern haircuts, old-school straight razor shaves, shoe shines, and impeccable customer service to each and every guest. The complimentary bourbon and cold beer are a bonus! We cater to the local business people, residents, and out-of-towners that frequent the Financial District part of the Loop.

Tell us about yourself

I got my start as a men's stylist early in my career. I was always fascinated with modern barbering and gravitated toward strictly cutting men's styles. I opened my salon after working for two other men's salons (which was a new concept at the time) and noticed the disconnect between the owners and the stylists. There was a need for an understanding of what makes a great salon appreciation and education for the staff. Happy and appreciated employees thrive in their craft rather than being just a number for the business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to be open for a decade and retaining most of our clientele even after a shutdown and pandemic. We continue to grow after all these years, and I am very grateful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With any service industry business, hiring and consistency can be tough at times. We are lucky to have a strong core, so the support has always been there no matter what challenges we face. We learn and bounce back.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Start small and start slow. Do your homework on demographics and the job market. Try coaching someone before dismissing them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Never be too comfortable with the business; always be attentive and appreciative of the people who show up for you.
