Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Molly Fish, owner of Urbane Collective, located in Colorado Springs, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Urbane Collective is a locally curated boutique for clothing, home decor, and gifts. We offer one-of-a-kind, size-inclusive clothing from sizes 0-3XL, locally made jewelry, all from artists in Colorado, as well as gifts and decor. We want to make sure that shopping local is affordable and accessible to everyone. When you shop local, not only are you supporting the small artists but over 75% of the revenue made is put right back into the community. Shop small, support local!!
Tell us about yourself
I was raised in Colorado Springs but moved away for twelve years for school and marriage. When I returned “home” to Colorado after a divorce, I witnessed the change and growth of Colorado Springs from a small town to on the map. Everything I loved growing up here, people had discovered, and Colorado Springs was booming. While plenty of people was moving here, there was a lack of affordable, size-inclusive, small, local shopping. It is important for me to offer something more to Colorado Springs than the informality of big box stores. I am trying to grow connections between the community and have a small platform for local artists to showcase their talents.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be able to help artists, mainly women, sell their products. I am passionate about helping women thrive either through employment or a platform to showcase their talents and bring back a missed connection between the community and shopping.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is learning and navigating the many hats an owner must wear. I am continually learning the business, social and creative aspects of running a business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The three tips I'd give to someone wanting to start and grow a business today are to have a clear idea of what you're going into business for. Two, surround yourself with like-minded people who want to see you succeed but will also be honest with you. Three, just do it! Whether that's starting small and doing local farmer's markets, craft fairs, or selling from your home, take the first step and see where it leads you!
