Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Nicholson, Owner of Urban Sweat, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Urban Sweat is a wellness studio located in Nashville that offers infrared sauna, red light therapy, and cold plunge. Our customers range from athletes to those taking their mental and physical wellness to the next level and those working with a physician to heal their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

Urban Sweat is my first entree to entrepreneurship! In 2020 I began to desire more purpose in my career and wanted to offer a service that allowed people to take their health into their own hands. Every day since I opened, I've said to myself, I wish that I had done this sooner! I had no idea how rewarding it would be to be a part of people healing their bodies, whether it's ridding their bodies of mold/Lyme, healing broken bones, clearing cases of eczema/psoriasis, stopping a Parkinson's tremor, making people more confident in their skin, helping people with their mental health and overall doing hard things. It's amazing what can happen in just 30 minutes as a gift to yourself each day. It's refreshing to be a part of something that is the best part of our guest's days.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being a business owner can feel a bit like a rollercoaster. If you've never been a business owner before, there is always something to learn for the first time almost daily. I'm proud of the team that I've built around me, having a growth mindset and being relentless in scaling the business. But the thing I'm most proud of is the community we've built at the studio, and I can't wait to continue that in each area that we grow this year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

That rollercoaster of high highs and low lows. I'm a type A person, and having to release control in certain areas was one of the first things I learned that I had to do, or I would've driven myself crazy. This has been an incredible growth experience for me personally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait. There's never going to be a 'right time' or 'feel ready.' Leap.
  2. No one knows what they're doing all of the time. Don't feel bad if you have to refer to Google to figure things out some days.
  3. Find a group of like-minded individuals that you can talk to about being a business owner, whether it's a mastermind or entrepreneur community in your city. You are not the only person who's ever had the problem you're trying to solve. Use others to learn from their experiences, and you will likely help them as well.
