Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Gardner, Founder of Uprooted Herbs, located in Temecula, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I make small-batch organic herbal infusions, ranging from herb-infused oils, tinctures, and salves. I also have a wide variety of organic loose-leaf teas that hand mix, which come with a free (organic cotton) tea bag! If you find me in person at the market, I also offer plant-based tie-dye yoga gear! My customer base ranges, but I really make my products with mental and physical wellness in mind. Many of my customers come to me with mental health issues, gut issues, skin issues, hair loss, etc. Luckily I have a wide array of products to suit the needs of most!
Tell us about yourself
In my day job, I work as a mental health professional, and I have always been intrigued by the mind-body connection. With that said, I believe that physical and mental health go hand in hand. I have always been more interested in alternative treatment methods (herbs, supplements, etc.). In 2019, I began making my own personal tinctures and face oils. Soon, this turned into making products for friends and family members until it turned into a business one day. I can honestly say that I love what I do and have a passion to continue learning! Infusing herbs and creating new products is my self-care and being able to share that with people is what keeps me motivated!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is overcoming my fears/insecurities with communicating and self-promotion. I used to be so shy and unable to verbalize my products when I first started doing farmer's markets... that didn't last long! Thankfully with my "Vibration Raising" tincture, I quickly transformed into a social butterfly. I love discussing nutrition and herbs with my clients, and my business has definitely brought out a new side of me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest part about being a business owner is social media... I'm trying!! With juggling my day job, managing a business, and infusing products (which takes about 5 weeks), social media is the last thing on my mind.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Do it!! Ask yourself what is holding you back because the answer is usually fear-based. There is a reason behind your passion, and you are meant to share it!
