Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laurie Moro, Founder of Uplyft Fitness, located in Macomb, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Uplyft Fitness provides live and virtual personal training and coaching. We specialize in working with women and all the amazing changes one goes through after age 40.
Tell us about yourself
I have a sports medicine degree; I am a board-certified athletic trainer. I have worked in many settings, including sports sidelines, outpatient physical therapy, commercial gyms, and a multi-disciplinary clinic. In each setting, there were always more people to help than appointment times. When it became really easy to take videos on our phones, I found myself using the technology to help patients/clients repeat exercises on their own by referring to the short video I would take of us. In 2017, I decided to take this even further but offering online personal training via live video sessions, in-person sessions, and personalized workouts via an app. This allows women with sore, achy joints a personalized workout without having to get our schedules to match.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting more comfortable with being uncomfortable. It can be intimidating to walk into networking events, it can be scary to hire tasks out, and it's uncomfortable to try something and have it not go as you imagined. These are all things that you need to get comfortable with.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I found that many of the challenges I faced as an employee were still there when I was the boss and the employee. For example, feeling there is never enough time. It's one of the reasons I was motivated to go online. There was never enough time to serve my clients and keep up with marketing or my own education. That didn't change as the business owner. So I had to change my mindset around time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first is a tip for business owners AND clients, don't strive for perfection, just progress. You can get paralyzed by striving for perfection. This goes back to being uncomfortable; you need to get more comfortable when it doesn't go how you imagined.
The second tip is to have other motivating business owners around you. They should be from your field and other fields. Make an effort to spend time with them. As I mentioned before, I don't feel like I always have the time for this, but you need to set realistic expectations as to how many times a month you can have lunch, a walk, or a coffee with another amazing business owner. You need each other.
The 3rd tip would be time block, time block, time block. Keep editing those blocks.
