Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christie Insil Kim, founder of Unwind Therapeutics, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Unwind Therapeutics is a holistic and multidisciplinary clinic where patients can be supported in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of their health. I trained in and integrated my treatments with traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture and herbal medicine), massage therapy, yoga therapy, skin/laser therapy, heat therapy, and somatic counselling to accommodate my patients in their unique and organic ways. We are experiencing many wholistic healing and growth in individuals who are open-minded, curious, willing and wanting to learn about themselves and better health.

Tell us about yourself

I was always curious about life and people, including myself, especially about our suffering. I started studying more and deeper about it via spirituality/religion, philosophy, science, art, and medicine. During this journey, I learned more about my own and how therapeutic help is crucial for a better life. Unwind Therapeutics is a business that lets me fulfill my purpose of helping others through wholesome therapeutic experiences.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When my patients' lives get easier and they feel empowered about their health.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The balance between reality and expectation. I can get excited or disappointed about something, and it's been extremely helpful to check in with my business adviser and get his perspectives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Baby steps. Starting a business can be exciting but also overwhelming. It is a complicated process and full of uncertainty (like the pandemic situation). Having baby steps and making organic adjustments were helpful to me.
  2. Get professional help if you can. I feel very fortunate to have my adviser, especially when things weren't looking great. He helps me focus, reflect, and be emotionally balanced to make a better business decisions.
  3. Business is NOT ME. It's easy to get involved with it too much, and I found my identity as a business owner can override others. I try to make sure to take care of my other needs so I can support my business to thrive.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Growing my clinic has been the most adventurous journey in my life. I was recently offered to expand my business in Abu Dhabi, UAE, so another new journey is about to start for me. I feel excited and nervous about it, as though it is my first time opening a business. Hard work is laid ahead, but I am up for it. How about you?
