Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dianna Terry, Founder of unLearning University, located in Newbury Park, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
unLearning University is a space that supports women's personal growth through the knowing and setting of healthy boundaries. I offer my services as a Boundaries Coach, as well as a weekly podcast sharing insights and lessons learned to help women live happier, more authentic lives.
Tell us about yourself
I began my own personal growth adventure years ago, and through many books read, courses taken, and therapy, I've been able to create a life in that I am truly thriving in. Drastically different than the feeling of just surviving as life speeds by, I wanted to help other women gain the same clarity and freedom that I have found. By sharing my own experiences and lessons learned, I can help other women do the same; that is my motivation.
I started my podcast, originally named Owning Your Authenticity, in 2021 during the pandemic. After some hard lessons learned, I came to realize that the root of what I was sharing all came down to understanding and setting healthy boundaries. After I realized that, I changed the direction of my podcast, renaming it Bold Boundaries. I decided to go all in on my offerings, opening my schedule to help other people do the same as a Boundaries Coach.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far in this new venture is that my podcast has listeners in 10 different countries. Just knowing that I am able to help people all over the world really drives me to create valuable free content for those that need it.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me is showing up when I don't feel like it! Everyone has been there; that day, you want to call in sick because you just need a break. Well, that's not really an option when you are the only one there to do the work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Spend the time to understand your "why," and if you want to know more about that, read Start With Why by Simon Sinek.
- Put systems in place from the beginning, and write down the step-by-step process for the things you do. There will come a time when you hire someone to help you, and having these Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) down will be a huge help.
- Check in with yourself every few months to make sure you're still on the right path. It's easy to get distracted and for your path to drift. And it's ok for the path to change and pivot as long as you don't lose sight of your end goals.
