Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel Onyshuk, Co-Founder of Unisyn, Inc., located in Tampa, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

70% of the variance in team engagement is determined solely by the manager (Gallup). Unisyn empowers your frontline managers to become frontline leaders, digitally transforming your daily huddles and enabling you to replicate the behaviors of your best managers at every location.

This digital transformation unleashes powerful behavioral metric data, allowing you to manage by exception, coach managers more effectively, and easily recognize great performances.

Unisyn unlocks frontline communication and collaboration, provides easy access to every company resource, and authentic social connections where employees rapidly build relationships with associates "just like them," building a strong "Employer of Choice" culture.

Our customers are mid-size and large service industry companies, with dozens, hundreds, or thousands of distributed teams across many locations, serving their customers as the hands and feet of their companies and representing the companies they serve with every action they take.

Tell us about yourself

Joel has been deeply involved in over one hundred successful digital transformation and frontline culture change initiatives, working as a technology and change management advisor to Fortune 500 manufacturing companies.

I am relentlessly driven to help frontline organizations unlock the latent potential of fully engaged and empowered frontline workers. I now bring my expertise to the Service Industry to restore the dignity and pride in frontline work, helping managers transition into leaders.

Over my career, I've delivered over 100 digital transformation and frontline engagement projects with a 100% success rate, demonstrable and proven <1 year ROI.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Bringing on a global, Fortune 500 company as my very first paying customer after seeing them powerfully engaging their frontline workforce in ways they've never been able to before without our enabling technology and services.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The total pressure of always being "on," thinking critically of the challenges and obstacles, and strategizing solutions that MUST be successful for our customers to be successful and our employees to flourish.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find strong industry experts to partner with you, filling your skillsets and capabilities gaps. Don't do it all alone, even if that requires relinquishing equity in the business to others.
  2. Know your industry, challenges, and product better than anyone else. Be a student of your industry and never stop learning or exploring opportunities to better yourself.
  3. Have total alignment with any significant other in your life regarding the time commitment, financial commitment, and risk factors involved in your business. If you do not have their support, you risk more than just your business failure... you risk relational shortcomings, which are far more costly to you.
