Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a wellness business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bryn Savage, founder of Plum Mental Wellness, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Plum is a mental wellness clinic supporting professionals and young professionals with their mental health and happiness. We use a variety of treatments, including psychotherapy and neurofeedback.
Tell us about yourself
I trained as a psychotherapist in graduate school but pivoted to corporate consulting after finishing school. The pandemic changed all of that — the numbers of people struggling through their day struck me, and I shifted towards a combination of psychotherapy and exciting technology called neurofeedback that creates incredible results much faster than psychotherapy.
I love the work that I do — because I know firsthand what it is like to be happy and satisfied, even in challenging circumstances. It is so important to me that others are also empowered with that same knowledge and self-awareness. It is essential to offer that to clients and employees — I try to make sure that we walk the talk personally and professionally.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
How much have their lives changed due to the work we are doing when they come into the clinic.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a business owner, the buck stops with you. While that is incredibly rewarding, it can sometimes be easy to see the stressful side instead of the potential. I actively work to see where I am limiting myself or making decisions based on bias instead of accurate sources of information.
What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first is very simple: find cheerleaders. They can come in the form of a partner, friends, or a business coach.
On the flip side, someone who challenges you can push you more than you are willing to make yourself.
Think strategically. It is so easy to get washed away with the idea of continuous growth: but it is so important to have a personal or professional philosophy behind what you are doing — and concrete goals that ground you along the way; every step of the process is essential.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
In terms of systems (part of the job!) — I think the most satisfying part of the job is developing systems — inside the business, systems for onboarding, methods for communication, strategies for interacting with clients, etc. That is fun, maybe unexpectedly!
