Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tony Nutley, Founder & CEO of UK College of Personal Development, located in Swindon, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We deliver award-winning personal and professional development courses and qualifications. Our customers are anyone that wishes to invest in their future success, both personal and career advancement.

Tell us about yourself

I had been working in the corporate space for a long time; I knew I wanted to do something that made a positive difference in people's lives and how they lived. I stumbled into the world of personal development and NLP tools and models, and it was a revelation. Putting the ideas and models to work in my personal life demonstrated that it works, so I made the decision that I would set up a college focussing on delivering the very best personal and professional courses and qualifications that my team and I could deliver. The key daily motivation for me is both the feedback we get from our students and being involved in personal development content that keeps you fairly motivated and ensures a clear positive mental attitude.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business through 2 or 3 recessions has to be there; also, the fact that we have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and organisations and add real value; it's been an incredible 24-year journey!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Maintaining the original mission and passion that you had 24 years ago. The actual running of the business can, at times, be VERY challenging. That said, the rewards are worth the hard times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear about what your business message is and why you are excited to begin the journey.
  2. Build a team of people that trust you and really want to be a part of the mission and share the journey.
  3. Be as flexible as you can in how you work towards your outcomes, and always remember that there will be tough times, but there will also be times for celebration and success.
