Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rosalie Gale, owner of Ugly Baby, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We create an innovative product called Shower Art. It's waterproof art you can hang in your shower with a suction cup. Our business name is Ugly Baby, and it is named after a picture of my husband on the day he was born.

Tell us about yourself

We are Rosalie and Douglas Gale - two Seattle artists who happen to be married to each other. Shower Art was invented when Rosalie was bored in the shower one day and mentioned to Doug that there should be something you could look at in there. They set about figuring out a way to make it happen.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We opened a small shop in the historic Pike Place Market ten years ago. We took over another popular shop called Monster, which features the work of independent artists as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is absolutely having to have so many different skills. As a small shop, you need to know how to do accounting, marketing, advertising, graphic design, web development -- all on top of making your art.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it now. The timing is not going to get any better.
  2. Don't be afraid. If you're willing to put the work in - it'll be easier than you think to make a living.
  3. Hire people to do things you aren't good at or don't want to do.
