You are Unique - UforU

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Arman Carter, Founder of UforU, located in Washington, D.C., USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

UforU helps patients with depression feel better faster. We do this by using the latest peer-reviewed medical research. After answering some questions about your health history, UforU uses information on what worked for millions of patients with depression to identify what will work best for you. Within 24 hours of using our service, you’ll get a custom report of your recommended antidepressants, including information on how effective they will likely be, their side effects, and how we arrived at our conclusion. You can head to your doctor and get your prescriptions with your report in hand. UforU even collaborates with your doctor to explain how our service works, ensuring you get the best care possible.
In addition to working directly with patients, UforU offers our services to health organizations that want to use our technology to address depression in the patients they serve.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in engineering, and I’ve always been motivated by working on hard problems that make the world a better place. I worked at Tesla for four years on their vehicle exterior lighting team, where my job was to take concept sketches of the vehicle lights and bring them to life. It was an awesome experience, but I always had aspirations of starting my own business. Shortly after leaving, COVID hit, and I saw firsthand the negative impact it was having on people’s mental health. This is why I started UforU. Today, my goal is to advance the responsible use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to arrive at smart treatment recommendations for all sorts of medical issues.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In addition to seeing someone benefit from using UforU, I’m proud that what we’re doing is generating interest from mental health professionals. They know the subject better than anyone else, and their support means a lot.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having the courage, strength, and mindset to ask for help. No owner is 100% confident in their plan or ability to execute. If you have just a little doubt, it can be hard to ask other people to contribute their time and money. Without the courage and humility to ask for help, it isn’t easy to make meaningful progress. You don’t know what you don’t know.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Assuming your goal is to grow your business rapidly (the traditional startup route), in order of priority:

  1. Address a problem you care about. You often want to give up, and if you don’t feel a personal connection to the issue, you will give up on one of those folks on the road.
  2. Build a team. Remember: you don’t know what you don’t know. Once you’ve selected a problem to work on, your absolute next priority should be to build a team you can learn from to contribute to your goal.
  3. Commit. Have the courage and humility to ask for people’s time and money.
