Handcrafted Shower and Bath Stuff - Tulip Tree Soap Company

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carrie Mick, Owner of Tulip Tree Soap Company, located in Whiteland, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate Tulip Tree Soap Company. Our core statement is "Every Body, Every Day," meaning our products are designed to be gentle and accessibly priced so everyone can use them.

Tell us about yourself

I saw a video on making soap and fell down a rabbit hole! Then I wanted to try it and fell in love with the process - the science behind what ingredients make the best bar, choosing scents, and creating fun colors and swirls. Making soap and other skin care products allow me to be creative in a way that also feels very functional.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my first wholesale order was pretty awesome! It opened the door to a wider audience (and more revenue which is always a good thing), and it also helped me feel more established as a business owner. Now, Tulip Tree Soap Company products are in over dozen shops and even hotels!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Avoiding "shiny object syndrome." There are always new trends and fads in skin and hair care, and I want to try to make them all and offer them, and that's not always feasible. Now, I consider what aligns with my shop and my mission, what will benefit my customers, and if it will be a long-term item before I decide to formulate, make, and sell a new product.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a clear look at your cost of doing business beyond just the cost of ingredients or inventory. There are so many extra costs - packing materials, website hosting, cleaning supplies, and especially paying yourself!
  2. Only go into a business to do what you love, not necessarily what is most profitable. If you're selling something you don't love, you won't succeed.
  3. Don't skimp on packing tape. Get the good stuff.
