Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cyndi O'Brien, Founder of TruLife Coaching, located in Chandler, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a life coach. I specialize in career coaching, offering career guidance, assessments, and resume writing services. I also provide general life coaching, particularly support for those dealing with pandemic/Long COVID stress, sleep problems, etc., and I work on coping skills, such as mindfulness and meditation. In a time of such flux in the world, many people need support from a life coach who can offer accountability and motivation in striving for self-improvement goals.

Tell us about yourself

After being a secondary English teacher for 18 years (and now a college adjunct English professor), I made a decision a few years ago to earn a master's degree in school counseling. Many students were coming to me with their problems, so I felt I could be useful as a counselor. Then I discovered the wonderful business of life coaching, in which I could combine both my teaching and counseling skills as a coach (and so I went back to school again and earned a Life Coach Graduate Certificate). I know many people are searching for help in today's chaotic world, and there are not enough practitioners. I know I'm providing a needed service.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I have started and am beginning to see the fruits of my labor. That is a nice feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting started is one of the hardest things with being a business owner. There are so many details to care of before a business owner can actually start operating. Additionally, marketing is a challenge and a trial and error process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research everything you can about the business.
  2. Be realistic and understand that there are SO many little details to take care of before you can really get going and profit from the business.
  3. Do not expect overnight success. It may take a while, and you should give yourself plenty of time to reach your goals - one step at a time!
