Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caitlin Poole, Founder of True Roots Wellness, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run an online nutrition consulting practice. Using a holistic approach, I help women to eliminate PMS so they can experience pain-free periods, more energy, and stable moods. But what I love most is helping them to regain control over their body so that they can begin living life to the fullest.
Tell us about yourself
Becoming a Certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant was not even on my radar until I began having health issues of my own. After visiting countless doctors and being prescribed a plethora of medications over the course of several years, I was finally diagnosed with Endometriosis. This is estrogen dominance that was causing me to have debilitating monthly cramps and complete exhaustion, so severe that I had days where I physically couldn't get out of bed.
The solution the doctors offered was to just take more meds, but that was not solving my problems. In fact, with the side effects of the prescriptions, I often felt worse. I was given no other option but to figure it out on my own. So I dove into research and even went back to school to study nutrition. I took all my newfound knowledge and managed to eliminate my own pain. Once I had regained control of my own body and life, I knew that I needed to use this skill to help other women who were in the same position.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I see myself as a nutrition consultant first and a business owner second. So my biggest accomplishments are always the success of my clients. Even when they have small wins, I can barely contain my happiness!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There are so many challenges that I was not expecting as a business owner, but I think the hardest one is time management. Being a solo entrepreneur, I need to effectively handle all the elements of the business myself, including IT, marketing, advertising, sales, client services, accounting, etc. Creating a realistic schedule for all the tasks is crucial, but they also need to be a degree of flexibility for when things go awry (because that'll happen!)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ask for help from the beginning, and be selective on who you take advice from. I spent far too much time taking advice from friends and family who had never run an online health business, and it really set me back. If I could go back in time, I would have hired a business coach right from the start.
- Try not to compare yourself to other business owners. This one is tough, especially when you're on social media. The image you see online does not account for all the years of work they have put in behind the scenes, so comparing yourself to someone in a different phase of business is not going to do you any favours.
- Be consistent and be yourself. The right people will find you.
