What's your business, and who are your customers?
True Hair Education is an innovative education company for hair stylists and salon owners of all skill levels. Our focus is to share chemistry-based information that helps stylists get desired results. True's information is unique because we are not affiliated with or promote any brands. This is very unusual in the hair industry, and it allows us to focus on ingredients, the structure of the hair, and how they interact. I own and operate True Hair Education with my partner Brenda Amaral. We are both salon owners that still work behind the chair; this ensures our information is accurate and relatable. My salon is Brushed Hair Salon in Newburyport, MA. True offers in-person classes at different locations throughout the country, as well as digital courses.
Tell us about yourself
Making women feel beautiful and confident through hair has always been where my heart is. Helping other stylists decipher which products will give them the best results and how to use them has become a passion. Through the information we share at True Hair Education, stylists grow, become more confident, and are happier. I love sharing my passion for the hair community through our classes and coaching programs. The hair industry is a wonderful, magical space that is always learning and growing. We have the ability to help people in ways most don't.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Receiving messages from attendees after class is always a huge boost. When an attendee reaches out to say that they are implementing what they have learned in class and experiencing great results, I'm always fulfilled. Helping stylists and salon owners in any way we can is our main focus, so we succeed when they succeed.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
My business partner, Brenda Amaral, and I regularly laugh about the 'roller coaster ride of owning a business.' Sometimes unexpected things come up in business, or you have to learn a new software program, and it's a bummer, but then 5 minutes later, we will have a flood of ticket sales or a message from a student about how their life is so much better after attending class and we are celebrating. In business, you have to take a moment and look at the wins and celebrate, don't just focus on the bad days. This has been a big ah-ha moment for us. We now celebrate the wins, even if it's a text to one another with a bunch of emojis 😀
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- True Hair Education launched with in-person classes in January 2020, so we have had to be willing to pivot & learn to grow and reach more stylists. You will always be learning; that's part of growing. It's never set it and forget, so be sure you love what you are doing.
- Find a way to separate yourself from the pack and talk about it tirelessly so your people can find you.
- Celebrate the wins. You will have wins and losses, hopefully, more wins. We acknowledge the losses and talk about how to fix them or what we would do differently the next time, but we absolutely celebrate the wins.
