Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tricia-Kay Williams, CEO of Metamorphose Counselling and Consultation Ltd., located in Coquitlam, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business provides counselling and consultation to people who are navigating a life, career, or relational transition. We also offer workshops and DEI services to high-education and faith organizations.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Jamaican woman who had various traumatic and transitory experiences in life. I experienced the positives of seeking help from advisors, mentors, and counsellors throughout my life. I also understand what it means to have supportive and trusting people to talk to. I wanted to create a space for other people to experience this kind of care and empathy regarding their stories.
I opened my business in 2018 and worked part-time, providing low-cost counselling to persons who could not afford the regular cost of counseling. Then in 2020, during the pandemic, I saw a need for more BIPOC persons and persons from the LGBTQ community to gain access to counseling, and I decided to open my practice full-time. I also started a Youtube channel called - Meta Transitions - to reduce the stigma of seeking help and to highlight that transitions are normal. I am motivated to help clients find awareness of themselves and make the right decisions that will create lasting transformation in their life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment to date is aligning myself with organizations that are advocating for marginalized people and continuing to champion the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. I also feel great about our Youtube channel and the stories we are able to share on a global scale - the hope is that these stories are helping the viewers who watch them.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is the administration and wearing many hats. At some point, delegation became my best friend. I had to identify the skills that I did well and the skills that I was not great at, then hire someone to do the tasks I wasn't good at. This allowed for team building and shared responsibility that led to growth.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start now, start simple - this was advice I got from a guest speaker called Dan Ram.
- Identify the skills that you are good at and the skills that you are not great at, then hire someone to do the tasks you are not good at.
- Create a positive atmosphere around you, identify who the naysayers are, and distance yourself from them. Build a community around you who are willing to support and cheer on your growth.
