Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dena Lampert, Executive Director and Owner of Triangle Cognitive Therapy, located in Rockville Centre. NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Triangle Cognitive Therapy is a group of psychotherapists with various training and disciplines who offer mental health therapy to the local community and virtually within New York State. Our group offers individual, family, couples, and group therapy to all age groups and presenting problems.

Tell us about yourself

I was working as a licensed clinical social worker in the non-profit world for 15 years. I was a "front lines" worker who treated very sick and needy clients throughout those first years. In 2011, I decided to try and build a solo practice as I was looking for new challenges. As I developed a name for myself, I realized that I could offer more service to the community if I had associates that could work with the overflow of clients. In 2018, I began the process of developing a PLLC. and eventually hiring my first employee. Today we are a company of 9 providers and still growing. I am constantly amazed at what my staff is able to accomplish with their clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is that I have been able to build a private group practice where my clinicians work collaboratively as a team. We are not just a group of therapists that are loosely connected by a shared space and tax id. We meet as a team regularly and often collaborate on our cases when indicated.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part about becoming a business owner is having to constantly remind me that I can't do all the work myself. I have to delegate and allow my staff to challenge themselves to grow, become better therapists, and make mistakes at times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Every task takes longer than you expected.
  2. Be rigorously aware of how you address your staff and be open to their ideas.
  3. Find time every day to step away from your computer.
