What's your business, and who are your customers?

Behavioral Health organizations help those in the community facing mental health, substance use, and intellectual & developmental challenges. As a Business & Leadership Coach/Consultant, I support those agencies facing their own challenges with their revenue. I help them incorporate successful strategies in their management and operations to improve their productivity and increase their revenue, so they extend their reach in the community. That means they can bring more services to those looking for them.

Tell us about yourself

As someone who loves solving problems and helping others with challenges, I decided to start my own business so that I could reach more businesses and lives. I enjoyed being able to assist the companies I worked for in moving forward, but I wanted to be able to do more, to reach more. Now each day, I get to help multiple organizations along with those they serve and to be a part of something larger. I also get to have control over how that looks so I can make sure I'm making the greatest impact.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment has been starting my company and keeping it going for over seven years. Running a business is not always easy, and there are elements of it that you may not be aware of going into it. It is also difficult in a lot of cases to have the confidence to just take that first step. You will have multiple challenges as a business owner. Some lead to accomplishments, and some don't. Regardless, the fact that you took that first step and are moving forward, in my mind, is the greatest accomplishment you'll have in your business because so many people never do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing in being a business owner is knowing everything truly is on you. You are responsible for everything in your business. Everything from decisions, customer services, employees, work environment, and all the other elements of the business is your responsibility, either directly or indirectly. It is different when there is an issue with a job not being done, a customer complaint, an employee concern, etc., and being able to go to someone and say "this is the situation" and them handling it vs. being the "someone" people go to. The hard part about it is usually the wondering about what decision to make or action to take and then wondering if it was the correct one. While I think this is the hardest part of being a business owner, I also think it's the piece that makes it worth doing. This is the piece that lets you be who you want to be in your business and how you serve your clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you're looking to start, run, and grow a business, I would say:

  1. Be confident in yourself and what you have to offer others.
  2. Ask for help. You don't have to do it alone and shouldn't try to.
  3. Look past the fear. There will be plenty of scary times but don't let them deter you.

If you are confident in what you want to accomplish, you find help in the multitude of resources available to you, and don't give up at the first sign of trouble; you can figure the rest of it out.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

While being a business owner has been one of the most challenging things I've done in my life, it has also been one of the most rewarding. I took so long to start my business because of the fear, and after I did, I regretted not doing it sooner. Every day is not rosy, but every day is a day I get to do something I enjoy that I know is helping others and is done on my terms. So at the end of the day, even the tough ones, I'm excited about where I am and the potential for where I can go.
