Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Trey Speegle, owner of Trey Speegle, Gallery 52 and Galeria 25, located in Jeffersonville, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an artist. My customers are potentially anyone, mainly people who like my work.

Tell us about yourself

My work is based on vintage paint-by-number paintings, of which I have about 3000+. I recontextualize them in all forms and have done collaborations with Stella McCartney, Anthropologie, Jonathan Adler, and others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Any artist's biggest accomplishment is just to keep it all going and get your work out the door in whatever form it takes.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing 50 different hats, but these days you have to unless you can afford a lot of help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define what it is you want early on. What you REALLY want. Owning a business can seem like fun, but of course, it's a lot of work.
  2. Love not just the product but the day-to-day, or you won't be happy.
  3. Constantly resist why you are in the business you chose. At some point, you might need to rethink things.
