Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vishan Ravi Tejaas, Co-Founder of Transitry, located in Singapore.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Transitry is a climate-tech startup committed to bridging the financial gap that nature-based solution requires to remove enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to mitigate climate change. It has developed a reliable and scalable Digital - Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system supercharged with AI to implement carbon governance and give access to green cash flow, which is necessary for the start and successful completion of decarbonization projects. Its Digital MRV concept works in practice by looking at how a project affects both the past and the future, reporting on the procedures that project owners have actually used in order to facilitate payments, and offering a rapid and open credit approval process for verifiers who require it. It does so by scanning project areas with active near real-time satellite imagery and smart sensors by applying proprietary AI algorithms, and using continuous monitoring of carbon activity, giving businesses sustainability insights and potential impact reports in their supply chains.
The carbon sequestration monitoring platform enables project owners to:
Apply with confidence for carbon initiatives because the system performs eligibility checks to ensure the program complies with all standards. Enroll in their project and select the regenerative practices they would like to employ. The platform determines one's capacity for carbon sequestration and the baseline carbon emissions in the event that the farm revenue declines. Quantify carbon sequestration in the most efficient way. Using models that have been verified by science, the system provides transparency and accuracy in results quantification. Verify carbon outcome data. The platform provides transparent outcome data reporting and uses field data and satellite photos to confirm results. Smart sensors, satellites, and artificial intelligence power the platform. Its models have a 95% accuracy rate in detecting carbon. Customers - Agro-based corporate customers based out of India & SEA.
Tell us about yourself
I am an aerospace engineer with a master's degree in innovation and strategy of the business. With 9+ years of experience in digital product management and other roles, I have a proven track record of being a successful product leader and a 3x venture builder, with one successful exit under my belt. My expertise lies in product innovation and end-to-end product management in the ASEAN and European market space, with a focus on the B2B sector. I have worked in more than seven industries, including complex sectors like maritime, logistics, healthcare, and automotive.
I have experience working in organizations at various stages, from early-stage startups to growth-stage companies. My core skills are rooted in design thinking and value proposition, which I use to build market-fit, innovative products. I have launched more than six products to market from scratch, keeping the product at the center of the business and digital as the forerunner while always uncovering the "why."
My approach to problem-solving is user-centric, with a focus on human-centric design, simplicity, and attention to detail. In my last venture, I served as the Director of Product for one of the largest oil and gas organizations, where I was successful in driving the company from a problem statement to an enterprise solution that was adopted by other major oil and gas companies.
Currently, I am the co-founder of a Singapore-based climate tech organization called Transitry, which is backed by Antler and other top-tier VCs based in India and SEA. I lead the efforts of product and operations and wear several other hats as well. The idea for Transitry came about because I was facing a business problem within my own family-owned agriculture business, where we were struggling with sustainable agriculture, ESG reporting, and increasing crop yield and soil health. By founding Transitry, I was able to solve these problems while also addressing climate change and helping agribusinesses, thus killing two birds with one stone.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a serial entrepreneur, at the age of 19, I built a traditional brick-and-mortar business and sold it at the age of 21 with an exit of $ 5 million. The business was bootstrapped. I built the business to showcase that brick-and-mortar businesses are wealth generators, and we don't require digital products to do so.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a co-founder of a startup is managing conflicting priorities and making tough decisions. Startups are fast-paced and dynamic environments, and co-founders must be able to work together effectively and make difficult decisions under pressure. This requires strong communication skills, the ability to compromise and work towards a common goal, and the willingness to put the success of the company above personal interests. Balancing the responsibilities of starting and running a company can also be incredibly challenging and may require significant time and effort.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Conduct thorough market research: Before starting any business, it is important to have a deep understanding of the market and the competition. This will help you identify opportunities and create a business model that is sustainable and scalable.
- Focus on your customers: The success of your business depends on your ability to attract and retain customers. Make sure you understand their needs and wants, and design your products and services around their feedback.
- Build a strong team: A successful business requires a team of talented, dedicated individuals working together towards a common goal. As a business owner, it is important to hire the right people, provide clear direction and support, and foster a positive company culture.
