Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yuki Takaishi Payne, owner of Touch Wellness, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Touch Wellness provides customized wellness services in a workplace environment, serving corporate entities, non-profits, retail stores & factories, and anywhere where people are working!

Chair massage is the cornerstone of our business, but we also offer exercise instruction, ergonomic coaching, and virtual self-care classes. Every workplace has a unique culture and demand, so our goal is to deliver a tailored program to meet their needs. I also offer private, traditional Japanese massage and incorporate frequencies into my sessions with my frequency device, which addresses specific concerns on all energy levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Tell us about yourself

I knew I wanted to make a positive difference in people’s health & lifestyle. Life is about connection, relationships, and evolution. While there are so many ways to achieve these things, the human touch is a very important, basic human need I felt was necessary to bring about healing growth in a person’s life. The workplace environment made it possible for me to practice this healing modality while, at the same time, it allowed me to bring in an empowering coaching component by educating workers about proper body mechanics.

I bought this business back in 2004 from the previous owner after working for them for several years. It is rewarding to help people feel better immediately and empower them with tools to take better care of themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Owning this business for over 18 years, I never invested much in marketing or had a strong online presence. In spite of that, I am proud to say that I have built a winning team of practitioners to serve a sizeable portfolio of client businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries within my work schedule to ensure a sustainable work/life balance in energy, time, and resources.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you do and connect to your purpose. You do not have a strong foundation without it.
  2. Sharpen your leadership skills. This includes your integrity, communication, and connecting with the people working with/for you.
  3. Have someone by your side, whether a partner, a coach or an accountability partner. Or hire someone smarter and more knowledgeable than you. It’s much harder to do it all on your own. Pay attention to feedback and be open to change.
