Sharing Solutions Born From Experience - Tony Moore Speaks

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tony Moore, Culture Architect, International Keynote Speaker, Recovering HR Executive of Tony Moore Speaks, located in Clearwater, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We work with senior-level leaders who want to improve bottom-line performance by creating a culture of engagement and ownership. The vast majority of our customers are in the credit union industry or leading social service agencies.

Tell us about yourself

The common thread throughout my executive career was leading change. This included a couple of organizational turnarounds and leading the people/culture integration of five mergers. I came to discover that we could multiply the impact of our organization’s talent by creating and implementing people processes designed to support, engage, and equip those charged with the responsibility of carrying out the organization’s mission. I left my corporate job with a dream of helping leaders improve their bottom line by equipping them to deepen their impact on the people they serve.

Every day I am motivated by the crazy thought that I can make a difference. My personal life motto is that in every interaction with me, you are better off than you would have been had we not interacted. Quite honestly, I probably fail more often than I succeed, but I press on in my quest to fulfill this mission that I am on.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It would have to be the impact we have had on the people we serve. Here's an example of the kinds of testimonials we receive, "Our staff and credit unions were positively impacted by our time with Tony Moore. Program attendees gained confidence, refined leadership skills, learned new teamwork skills, enhanced communications, and built many strong and lasting relationships. Several attendees received promotions during or after attending Tony’s sessions, and they all say they are better equipped for additional leadership responsibilities. "

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a highly action-oriented, idea person, my biggest challenge has been slowing down and thinking ideas through, ensuring they align with our vision for the business. Jokingly I say I have never had an idea I did not like. My business partner, who is also my bride of 31 years, provides much-needed balance. She understands I am frequently wrong but rarely uncertain.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start by figuring out the specific problem you are solving. Customers are looking for solutions to their problems, and you need to be clear about your solution.
  2. Don't try to serve everyone. Identify your ideal customer (the person who has the problem you solve and can afford to pay for the solution you provide), learn everything you can about them, and target all of your marketing/sales efforts toward that customer.
  3. Surround yourself with people who will tell you when you have broccoli in your teeth. You have to have people around who have your best interest in mind and are willing to speak the truth to you.
