Insanely Delicious Homemade Pastries - Tonia's On A Roll

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wantonia Dyson, owner of Tonia's On A Roll Speciality Desserts & Catering LLC., located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started Tonia's On A Roll selling baked goods at the local farmer's market. I sell over 15 desserts, with cinnamon rolls being my signature item. I'm kind of health-conscious, so I include vegetables in the majority of my desserts. Customers don't realize they are getting something a little healthier in their sweets. My desserts are always freshly made from scratch with love, made with high-quality ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

I left the workforce to become a stay-at-home Mom. As much as I enjoyed being with my kids, I also wanted something for myself. Cooking and baking became my outlet and stress reliever. I needed to make extra money when my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I wanted something that offered flexible hours, which is hard to find work outside the home. I prayed about it, and God gave me the idea to sell baked goods. I love cooking and baking. My customers motivate me the most. The joy they have when they talk about how much they love my desserts is a blessing. My business is not a job to me because it's a part of my passion, and it's a way that I can bless others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner Is trusting God and believing in myself by stepping out in faith and becoming an entrepreneur. I have a loyal customer base. The fact that I can fellowship with my customers and provide nutritional sweets they can enjoy makes me happy. My customers know that I care about them and the service I provide.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing my time with family and business is one of the hardest things. I also need to make time for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must have a plan, write a business plan.
  2. Know your target market and study it so well to identify multiple targets.
  3. Connecting with Score for mentors and resources.
