Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tom Mihalik, owner of Tom's Place, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Tom's Place is a designer men's clothing store in Toronto. Our main profiles are suits and business attire, but we carry casual shirts, pants, and sports jackets, too. Tom's Place is a one-stop shopping experience for men. We have a wide range of inventory that you can't find anywhere else. Our experienced salespeople and in-house tailors make sure that your clothes look good on you and fit you well.
Tell us about yourself
Tom's Place started with my father in 1958. I started to work with my father when I was a teenager, and I've been working there ever since. We are a family business. My father passed away, but my sister, my son, and I continued running the store. I love our customers. We have a personal relationship with them. Sometimes I see three generations of customers shopping in our store. Grandparents buy suits for their grandsons. I feel I am part of their family, just as they are part of mine.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As any store owner can attest, the biggest accomplishment is simply able to stay in business. During our 64 years in retail, we were able to weather the storms. We were able to adjust to the changes and challenges. Reaching beyond the people who come to buy new clothes, we are also proud to serve the community at large.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Retail is not an easy business. I work seven days a week. I still love what I do, but I'm not getting younger. Having a business is a huge commitment.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Believe in yourself.
- Be prepared for ups and downs, and don't give up.
- When you have enough, don't forget to help others.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You can't do it alone. You need the support of your family.
