Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna, founder of Tomophotography, located in Tillsonburg, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Ontario, Canada. Through my lens, I aim to capture all of your special moments with true, raw emotion that you will cherish for a lifetime!

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved taking photos, and I used to carry around my Sony CyberShot everywhere I went, but I never considered making it into a career. It wasn't until five years ago, when my husband bought his first camera to take his own product photos for The Loyal Butcher Co., that I thought about getting myself into photography. I bought my first DSLR that Christmas, and the rest is history!

Never thought I would be a photographer and turn my passion into a career, but now I can't see myself ever doing anything else! When I'm not behind the camera, you can find me catching up on dog cuddles, at the beach, eating sushi, or binge-watching any crime-related show on Netflix.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm capturing one of the happiest days of someone's life, and they will treasure these photos for the rest of time. Weddings have multiple stories built-in throughout the day and to be able to witness and photograph that for someone is something special that I'm so grateful for.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping a balance between work and personal life. It's very easy to get lost in all the work by booking up weekends with weddings then spending the weekdays editing. I've come to realize burnout is real, and you need to take time for yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take "me time" – starting/running a business is super time-consuming. You will want to work on it every waking minute but don't forget to take some time for R&R.
  2. Consistency is key – growing a business takes a lot of time and hard work and doesn't just happen overnight. Keep showing up, grinding every day, and growth will come.
  3. Write down your business goals- it makes you more mindful and more efficient and will help you achieve those goals quicker! Also, there's nothing more satisfying than crossing out that goal once you accomplish it! :D
