Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tommy Gooovaerts, Founder of Introspection Academy, located in Halen, Belgium.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach the guitar style of world-class guitarist Greg Howe with online educational content! My customers are typically rock or blues guitar players that are somewhat stuck on their instrument and want to add some sophistication to their guitar playing but don't have the time to figure out Greg Howe's awesome and often sophisticated lines.

Tell us about yourself

I taught guitar in physical schools for years and got tired of teaching the same "basic" stuff. I wanted to teach what I wanted; Greg Howe's guitar style was an obsession for years, so I started an online brand teaching Greg's style.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In less than two years, I have almost 3000 Youtube subscribers, 1000 mail subscribers, 500 Instagram followers, and almost 200 active (paying) guitar students in the 3 Greg Howe guitar courses I created and/or members of my Patreon page, where I create fresh content every week. Greg Howe got over a million followers worldwide, but as learning his style on your own is almost impossible, guitarists absolutely love what I do, which is basically saving them years of their life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, currently, it's "scaling." I want to 10X my followers/students in 2023, but with the limited time I have, I'm not sure if that's realistic. Literally, everybody that comes in contact with my brand is raving about the content; the quality is there. I just need to reach more people.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Decide on what powerful software(s) to host a website, courses, online store, and mail marketing... I'm relying for all that on KAJABI, and it's exactly for that reason I need to scale, as KAJABI is not cheap!
  2. Create a content creation/social media posting rhythm.
  3. Make sure you totally LOVE your business. An online business takes time to get up to speed - you should aim for at least 3-5 years of consistent work; if you do not love the business itself, you're bound to quit early or burn yourself out.
