Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tom Palmer, Founder, and CEO of The Continuous Learning Company, located in Palmer, AK, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help teams and organizations learn faster and more effectively.
Tell us about yourself
I was working as a teacher exploring the future of education and got sucked down the organizational learning rabbit hole. I think developing how we learn is the key to surviving and thriving as a species. Staying connected to the big picture and my role in serving something much larger than just my immediate clients keeps me motivated each day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building my business up to the point my wife could quit her job to spend time with our kids was a truly incredible feeling. We are also gearing up for a 3-month international trip as a family. Creating a flexible lifestyle business was a goal from early on, and it's finally happening.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'd say knowing when to pivot. I've made a number of pivots over the years; some I think were wise, and others I don't think were quite right in retrospect. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, choose something you enjoy geeking out hard on, something you find endlessly fascinating. Second, find something that you feel contributes in a clear way to a meaningful vision of the future for you personally. Third, think hard about the kinds of people you want to interact with every day - not just your potential future teammates but your clients. How much would you enjoy sitting next to them on a plane for a few hours? Who would you love to be in that situation with?
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. Go in expecting it will take a long time to figure it out and that it will be very difficult at times. Don't get hung up on your own insecurities - make it about the people you are serving, not yourself. Keep them in the front of your mind and keep working to figure out how to serve them better.
