What's your business, and who are your customers?

Benefit Corporations for Good is building a community of purpose-driven businesses creating meaningful change in the world. Our mission is carried out through certification, education, and advocacy.

Tell us about yourself

Practicing the 3 P's of "People, Planet and Profit" lies at the very heart of benefit corporations. From the environment to equity, I admire how these companies focus on the greater good in their businesses, communities, and in their states. After writing the book "Putting Soul Into Business: How the Benefit Corporation is Transforming American Business for Good," I knew that working with purpose-driven leaders was where I not only wanted to be but what sparked me to get up every morning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been building a community of purpose-driven businesses. To date, we've certified 75 small businesses in 8 states and 1 Canadian province. They are helping create meaningful change in the world.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Building a community as a business owner requires you to overcome three formidable obstacles: (1) Uncertainty, (2) Noise, and (3) Nay-Sayers. The successful business person goes ahead and does things anyway because the mission is always bigger than the objections that lie in the way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The three tips I'd give to anyone starting a business are simple:

  1. Find a mission bigger than any of the objections.
  2. Trust your instincts.
  3. Never lose faith in yourself.
