What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an independent artist creating original retro-styled pixel artwork. My customers tend to be gamers, gaming enthusiasts, and even music lovers who find my work aesthetically appealing. I also offer some digital art services in graphics, comics, etc.
Tell us about yourself
I was working a temp position at a game studio, and I realized I wanted to create more for myself. I didn't love being a cog in a big machine when I was always bursting with my own ideas. I started going to conventions and getting inspired by all the artists I saw there.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, after the pandemic, I came back to conventions with 90% original work, and I've seen so much more success than when I was making more Marvel/DC/Anime-inspired artwork. I think allowing myself to express art that I truly loved making resonated so much further with fans than when I was making a Legend of Zelda inspired-art piece.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is your failures that make you stronger. I started doing freelance work for little money, and I offered too much for the price. I realized what I couldn't deliver everything, and I was wearing too many hats and offering too many services. It caused me great stress,
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Figure out what you're good at. Figure out what you love doing. Under promise, and hopefully over-deliver.
