Attract Your Dream Clients With Ease - Toby Myles Copywriting
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Toby Myles, Founder of Toby Myles Copywriting, located in New Cumberland, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a conversion copywriter specializing in email funnels (welcome, launch, sales). I work with established, time-starved women entrepreneurs to grow their email lists and launch their programs in a way that feels authentic and on-brand but never salesy or icky.
Tell us about yourself
I've always loved to write marketing copy. In my 3-previous businesses, copywriting was one of my favorite things to do, and I knew I was pretty good at it. After nearly 15-years in corporate direct response marketing, I felt stifled. I'd hit the ceiling in my company. I knew I had more to offer the world, and it was never going to happen at my job. So I made a plan to leave. I started with a handful of freelance clients before leaving my 9-5 at the end of 2019, and it grew from there. One person told another person, and another, and another. You get the idea! I've been pretty fortunate in that many of my early clients came from referrals without too much effort on my part. When you do a good job for people, they love to share.
I LOVE working with women entrepreneurs to help them achieve THEIR goals in business through my copywriting. My clients are very similar to me; they care about their clients and want to always do their best work. But they also know how important it is to hire help for those things they're not good at or don't have time for. I LOVE this about my business. My clients are top-notch pros, but they also feel like friends, which makes work not feel at all like work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I've been able to grow and evolve in a way that feels authentic to me. I had a dream and a specific focus, and I haven't wavered on that. Understanding who my clients' audience is, and writing in a way that is authentic and on-brand, is one of my core values. It's not about me writing in my voice; it's about me learning my customer's voices and how to get inside the head of their prospects. I'll always stay true to this standard of work, and for me, that's my biggest accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
When things go great, I get to take credit. When things fail, I have to take responsibility. It can be a wild ride sometimes. There are days when I feel like I can do ANYthing! And then there are days when I'm thinking, "what the heck am I doing?". There's an ebb and flow, and you just have to be willing to ride it out. It takes grit, and it's not for everyone, but it's definitely for me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you can, start your business as a side-hustle and use your job to fund your new venture. Eliminating the pressure of finances will help to grow your business without feeling desperate.
- Lay the foundation! Get crystal clear on who your audience is and what their pain points are. Knowing this right up front will guide ALL of your decisions and strategies around marketing, website, branding, etc.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help! Find a group of like-minded business owners or biz besties and form an accountability pod. Having others in your circle who understand you and what you're trying to do is invaluable, especially if you have friends and family who just don't get it.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Life is short! If you have an idea and you want to start a business, do it! There are plenty of free resources out there to help you get started. With the explosion of online businesses, you really can get started with very little... an idea and an internet connection. If you want it badly enough, I say go for it, and don't listen to the naysayers. Will it be hard? Absolutely! But there's nothing better (in my opinion) than building something from the ground up and watching it grow and flourish!
