Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nemanja Sambaher, founder of TO Kinesiology, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
TO Kinesiology consist of a team of personal trainers and kinesiologists providing fitness, rehab, and physical performance services. We are medical exercise specialists working primarily with individuals who suffer from musculoskeletal issues and/or medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders, etc. We help our clients become healthier and fitter versions of themselves while at the same time managing their condition.
Tell us about yourself
Throughout my life, I suffered numerous injuries and health setbacks. This was mostly due to inadequate advice I was getting from the health professionals I was working with at the time. Since I was always an active person, this was very frustrating and hard to deal with mentally. Whenever I tried to stay active and keep the momentum going, I would get injured. Once injured, health professionals didn't have an understanding of my desire to get back to an active lifestyle, and some of them would actively discourage it. I decided to learn more about the human body in order to help myself primarily.
Over time as I was getting more knowledgeable, my friends and family would ask me for advice regarding their health and fitness. Soon, people offered to pay me to help them reach their goals. I realized there was a big gap in the field for fitness professionals knowledgeable about managing medical conditions and musculoskeletal conditions. Working with these types of clients is also most rewarding. It's an amazing feeling to see someone achieve their fitness or weight loss goal while at the same now feeling better, having more energy, no pain, and not needing their medications anymore. It's a truly a transformative experience for a lot of our customers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is opening my own clinic/gym. This has been a dream of mine for a very long time. Having my own space with my own specialized equipment where people would come to work on their health and fitness.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time management and work-life balance. I'm very passionate and invested in my business, so I don't really mind spending a lot of time working since most of that time is very enjoyable and rewarding. It's important to have understanding family and friends who will support you in this journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Before going into business, make sure to know what you are getting yourself into. It takes a lot of time, dedication, and perseverance to be a business owner. Figure out exactly who will be your customers? How will you serve them? Finances? Location? You will need to learn how to prioritize and plan. Doing most important things first.
