Built on Equality and Equity - To Be Determined
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Titsworth, Co-Founder of To Be Determined, located in Fayetteville, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At To Be Determined, we are a completely remote, for-some-profit digital consultancy. We label ourselves as a for-some-profit organization because our main focus is a duality of providing world-class technical solutions, architecture, or development. While at the same time, using that opportunity, we get to teach and hire individuals on an open employment basis. The goal is to help marginalized individuals gain career independence. As far as customers, we aim for anybody with a business or idea that needs technical or business solutions. We can provide a vast majority of technical solutions ranging from application development to automation as well as business development.
Tell us about yourself
I first started working on this with my colleagues around the latter half of 2021. I was and still am on active duty military. So building a structure that allowed for absolute flexibility was a must because not only was it the only time I could collaborate, but some people simply did not have time to stop what they were already doing to make a career change. We wanted to make the transition to tech for people possible. But we also noticed a large gap in individuals being hired versus individuals that wished to be hired.
It really started as a passion for technology and a passion for teaching and helping people achieve their goals. The number one motivating factor is seeing someone on our roster join our team and learn to be more proficient in their chosen vertical. While working on contributing to the team on delivering for our customers to take that skill set to be hired into a life-changing career change for them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has really been watching the team we have work well together throughout adversity. The culture within our company has been cultivated to focus on cohesion and growth. With our organization still being a small business, the rapid changes that can happen are difficult. Seeing the adaptability of everyone we have in delivering successful products is always rewarding.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is always time. There are only so many hours within a day, and every one of my colleagues has to remind the others to slow down at times. Everything you work for comes from sweat equity that you hope helps your organization in the end. All in all, I would say finding a balance between work and life.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find something that people need, identify a solution, and start small.
- Oftentimes, the most necessary thing that will need to be done is the most time-consuming and grueling thing no one wants to do. But sinking into it and staying positive will be more productive than a fast solution.
- Network, network, network. Remember that your reputation always precedes you when doing so as well.
