Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tina Mitoyan, Owner of Tina Mit Artistry, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I specialize in bridal hairstyling and makeup, and I also do photography. I work with bridal parties and brides. My photography work consists of intimate weddings, engagement sessions, and headshots. I work with various businesses creating photos to best suit their needs.
Tell us about yourself
I started Tina Mit artistry back in 2012, but I dabbled in the world of beauty way before then. I was always curious about skincare and beauty tips and tricks, so I would spend lots of time online researching; it was sort of a hobby as a teenager. I especially love to work with brides, and I love to be a part of their big day. I’ve met some truly kind women who trusted me to achieve a bridal look that made them feel the most beautiful and radiant. It’s rewarding and motivating because they chose you.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been to be able to be my own boss for the last 11 years. Sure, that comes with a lot of responsibility, but I wouldn’t trade it for any other job. It’s given me many experiences that I believe I wouldn’t be able to have otherwise and that on its own is an accomplishment and shouldn’t be overlooked.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The challenge with being a business owner is that you really do need to have a thick skin. Meaning having patience with just about anybody you meet. Some people will be your cup of tea, and others won’t, and vice versa.
Even though it is a competitive market, as a business owner, it is absolutely necessary to learn that comparison is the thief of joy, and to be able to do the job well, you’d have to be full of joy every time under any circumstance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top 3 pieces of advice for up-and-coming artists:
- Work hard, and I mean labor. Early wake-up calls, random schedules, giving up weekends, it’s all part of the job. No complaints. Every day you can work on your portfolio and skill to make your business more valuable.
- Consistency is key.
- Find your niche and build your clientele. Become valuable, and don’t worry about the rest.
