Luxury Hair Experience Tailored Uniquely - TimelesslyMirna

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in hair styling but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mirna Norales, Brooklyn Hairstylist of TimelesslyMirna, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a curly hairstylist specializing in color, keratin treatments, and extensions. My customers are women who need help understanding their curls so that they can pick the right products, styles, and regimens for their unique hair types.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating from cosmetology school, I started working in "high-end" salons in NYC. I learned a lot from running a salon, providing a luxury experience, and fine-tuning my cutting and coloring skills. Although I'm grateful for the Master Stylists who taught me all my technical skills, I noticed that when it came to curly hair, even the most seasoned stylist started to shake in their boots. There isn't much education when it comes to curly hair in the beauty industry, as euro-centric straight hair dominated for many years. Even in beauty school, there's not much education on working with curly hair.

I saw this as an opportunity to fill a hole in the industry and start educating my clients and audience about their curly hair. What motivates me is hearing my clients tell me how my advice has helped them gain control over their hair again and watching them fall in love with their curls.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is trusting myself enough to go out on my own and build my business. Sometimes great ideas just get stored away in our heads but being able to birth them to life is huge!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is reminding yourself to get out of your own way. I quickly learned that my business would only be as successful as I felt. Imposter syndrome, limiting beliefs, and fears will stunt your progress. You have to be able to heal and grow as a person in order to grow your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I would give someone looking to start a business are:

  1. Do something that you're passionate about. Something that you would do even if you weren't getting paid for it.
  2. Learn from a mentor that is doing what you want to do. Then find your own unique style and run with it.
  3. Personal Development is crucial to a growing business. You can't make a million dollars with a one-dollar mindset.
