What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tiffany Music Therapy is a private therapy practice offering psychotherapy and music therapy services and adapted music lessons. We work with children, teens, and adults seeking mental health support with various challenges or concerns. We also work with organizations such as schools, mental health facilities, women’s shelters, etc., providing individual and group sessions. The goal of Tiffany Music Therapy is to provide clients a space where they can take charge of their therapy experience through a therapy approach that empowers them and adapts to who they are.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Tiffany Sebastianpillai, and I am the owner of Tiffany Music Therapy. I am an accredited music therapist and psychotherapist that is passionate about helping others reach their therapy goals. I started Tiffany Music Therapy at the beginning of 2021 with the goal of offering therapy options to individuals where they can really feel heard. There’s a large portion of individuals who may not fully experience the benefits of therapy due to communication barriers. There’s also a large portion of individuals who may not know how to verbalize their experiences or emotions. By including a creative arts therapy approach in a traditional therapy session, we are making the benefits of therapy accessible to everyone. At the end of the day, our goal is to help individuals reach their therapy goals however that may look.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner so far has been managing the business and growing it through the pandemic. It’s certainly been an uphill battle learning new skills while growing my practice and managing the many changes COVID has introduced. But it’s been such an honor to work alongside so many incredible clients in such trying times.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is managing the many roles you have as a business owner. Especially as a solopreneur, there are many hats you wear that demand different things from you. As a therapist, you are not only juggling accounting, marketing, and administration tasks, but also your responsibilities as a clinician in providing care to individuals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Monitor your business. Set aside time every week to check on growth and assess progress on your strategy for the week, month, or year. This will help keep you on track to achieving your goals.
  2. Set challenging but achievable short-term goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the challenge of long-term goals. Rather than focusing on how far you still have to go, celebrate achieving the small goals that collectively have a large impact on the success of your business.
  3. Seek to learn in every interaction you have with others. Everyone has something valuable they can teach you, and understanding this can make you a better entrepreneur. Part of being an entrepreneur is accepting that you’re not the expert in everything.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

For anyone looking to start, run, or grow a business today, congratulations! It's not an easy choice to make, but it can be incredibly fulfilling. Keep pushing when things seem stagnant or hard. Your ideas are worth it!
