Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Hervas, Founder of Resilient Wealth, LLC., located in Queens, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Resilient Wealth is a consulting agency that is NYC based but not limited in location. Our mission is to build power toward equitable redistribution for BIPOC and marginalized communities. We do this by acknowledging that power is built through a mindset with health as a priority, a supportive community, and personal strategic financial management. Our services include: We provide holistic trauma-informed financial literacy workshops and culturally inclusive college and career readiness workshops; we also offer individual career and college counseling and have partners that offer free financial consultations. We also offer small business and non-profit consulting in the areas of grant writing, program development, and digital marketing. We typically work with community-based organizations, companies, and schools that invite us into their communities for workshop sessions.
We seek to work with anyone with a marginalized identity who has ever identified as resilient and with folks who hate how resilient they've needed to be because of the systems in place. We seek to work with people who want to impact change within themselves, their work, and in the world. We acknowledge that wealth is multifaceted and that wealth itself is power; when built together, we are a collectively interdependent powerful unit.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Tiffany Hervas; I am a community organizer, social worker, artist, activist, and financial professional. I've done it all, and in many ways, I continue to do it all because everything I've dedicated myself to I am truly passionate about. It wasn't until two years ago I decided to infuse my passions to create a consulting business that encompasses who I am and what I value. I have been a freelance writer and marketer for as long as I can remember, working small gigs here and there as I was studying for my social work degree, and later became a psychotherapist supporting immigrant families and families of mixed statuses. I founded this business after realizing how much in-demand work like financial and emotional literacy is, seeing how interwoven mental health and finances are, and that marginalized communities often regard both topics as taboo. I set out with a mission to normalize these conversations by meeting the community where they are at. Understanding what the issues are and where I could best be of service.
From the educational system to financial institutions, these systems have failed the average family, setting them up for failure. It's no wonder why folks feel they aren't able to get ahead or catch a break. I recognize the lack of financial literacy in our communities as a social justice issue. Knowing how many older adults are facing financial crisis for not having had any guidance earlier and are faced with complex conversations with their family members (or by themselves) about their retirement, the possibility of long-term care, and not feeling a sense of security, especially in the years where they should feel that the most. The statistic is the average family does not have $400 in their savings to cover an emergency expense. It's realities such as these that motivate me and ground me in the work I choose to do every single day.
This work is urgent for me; it's a necessity; people are recovering through so much and, at this particular time, need to prepare-- their financial and mental well-being. These are the important conversations in true wealth building.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building a unit of support around me, being in environments that accept me as I am and support me towards where I'm going by challenging me and holding me accountable to what I say and want to do. By having a supportive team around me, I've been able to stay on target with my goals and have made more connections with organizations to be able to help people on a larger scale. We have been able to reach people nationwide. This is the impact I've always intended to make as a business owner, and I never expected it to happen in the way that it has.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Remembering your why and being committed to it every day, on days when you "aren't feeling it" or feeling yourself. Staying grounded in who you are and what you do and creating systems that work for you that can keep you aligned with what you're building. Sometimes those systems create boundaries around your time or negotiables and stick to them. Self-block time in advance of when you are working in your business, on your business, and on you. All three are priorities.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Everything is googleable. Sign up for everything, all the webinars, even things you think you already know. Listen to things with a deep inner ear to understand and also be able to teach; when you do so, you retain information better.
- Start. Start exactly where you are with what you have. Perfection does not exist, and you will never have it all completely together.
- Find a Home, a network/ community of like-minded, committed, and determined people to remind you that while you may be in business for yourself, you are not alone in it.
