What's your business, and who are your customers?

Three Fates is a clothing and accessories store in Toronto carrying both new and vintage clothing and Canadian-designed Jewellery brands. It is an eclectic mix of great new pieces, vintage and new denim, floral dresses, vintage purses, and band tees.

Tell us about yourself

I started this business in 2014 in Parkdale, a tiny storefront on Queen Street; we moved into the current location on Dundas in 2019. Before Three Fates, I worked as an associate buyer and sample coordinator for Sears after years of working in smaller fashion businesses. I started selling vintage clothing at shows and pop-up markets under the business Bobby Mcgee Vintage in my early twenties as a part-time business for fun. I made enough connections; eventually, I was able to open a storefront and have tried to make it a different kind of space where vintage is approachable and on-trend.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting through the past two years? Kidding, I'm also a Mom, and I'm so proud to have created a team. A business that's enabled me to be both that and an entrepreneur with a viable business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to be flexible is really important. There's been a lot of change in how business and retail work, so the ability to adapt and change has been essential for me. It's the reason I'm still here.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make a plan. Write it down and then follow through with it; I know it sounds simple. But the key is to be able to show it to people and start the discussion. Do not just hold it in, or you will never start.
