Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Lethbridge, founder of beSTRONG Training, located in Vancouver, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help busy people stay active when life has other demands. Through pregnancy, postpartum, demanding family or work schedules, and more. I work with you to implement exercise into your day so that you can have more energy for the fun stuff outside the gym.
Tell us about yourself
I worked in corporate marketing for a long time - always training and coaching people on the side. I wasn't entirely convinced I could make a career out of training people, yet it's something I have always come back to. Throughout my own personal journey as an athlete - I would also coach 'on the side.' I learnt about many different disciplines - CrossFit, Powerlifting, Pre/Postnatal training, and others. I always found that celebrating the success of others was much more rewarding to me than how I felt when I competed, so during COVID, I took the leap to create beSTRONG Training and beMOMSTRONG full time. I'm motivated by giving people the knowledge and confidence to move and move well at any stage of their life. Some of the reasons that my clients work with me include being able to continue to ski into their 90's, keep up with their kids on the basketball court, and continuing to move through pregnancy for an easier postpartum recovery.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping many people overcome obstacles which may include time, fear of movement, and injury to living active, confident, and strong lives. Growing and continuing to grow a business during COVID.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time Management! I find it very difficult to turn off or to stick to a scheduled calendar. When you're passionate and growing, it can be tough to have a 'work/life balance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Talk, talk, talk - tell people what you're up to, network, and create connections. Valuable business is built through referrals. If you keep what you're doing quiet - then no one will know about it!
- Don't give up. If you really believe in what you're doing and what you're offering, then keep chipping away. It can feel like you're not making any progress, but after 6months/ 1 year, you'll look back and see how much you've accomplished.
- Customer service and connection are key. Across industries and services - people remember great service. Focus on this, and the rest falls into place.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Starting a business is a big commitment that requires you to jump in 100%. Back yourself and surround yourself with others that back you too. Support goes a long way.
