Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Wong, owner of Victoria Park Pharmacy, located in East York, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Independent Pharmacy- we especially support patients who have more significant difficulties advocating for their healthcare (ex: refugees, seniors, LGBT, non-English speaking immigrants, etc.)
Tell us about yourself
I used to be a pharmacist that worked in corporate. However, I was constrained by the boundaries that were imposed on me. Ultimately, I wanted a business model that puts patient care first before profits. I believe that if you treat patients well, they will treat you nicely in return. I did not regret a single day when I left the corporate world to start my independent practice.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To make a difference for patients in the local community.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Profits and healthcare, I think, are tough to mix. It can be tough to draw the line between someone's healthcare and the profits at times, especially when a patient cannot afford certain medications. Fortunately, through creative methods and teamwork, there is not a single patient at Victoria Park Pharmacy who couldn't afford their remedies to this date.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Humility, determination, honesty.
If there was one thing you could repeatedly do to help grow your business, what would it be?
Humility, humility, humility!
