Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in advertising services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Papi, Partner of The Xcite Group, located in Denver, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Xcite Group helps small and medium-sized businesses navigate the expanding world of digital marketing. We pride ourselves in helping customers compete against larger companies with larger budgets through consultation, education, and experienced execution.
Tell us about yourself
We have been in business for over 12 years, and our mission has evolved from wanting to support local businesses on pay-per-click campaigns to keeping our nationwide portfolio of customers on the leading edge of all digital marketing. What keeps us motivated is the need to always be one step ahead of the ever-evolving and constant change in the digital space.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a small business owner, we have two accomplishments we are very proud to crow about. Not only did we not let go or lay off any employees through the pandemic, but our teams also pulled together to make sure our customers made it over every hurdle during those very uncertain times.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Great question here. Being a business owner is rewarding but also hard for the same reasons. We love our people and are grateful to work with them every day. In the same breath, the hardest is knowing you are responsible for lives and families and need to make the right business decisions to keep them protected and working. Putting ourselves second is easy; making risky or difficult business decisions to benefit our employees is the hardest thing, and for me, it's what keeps me up at night.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
As a business owner, people ask me all the time for advice on starting their own business. I don't think my answers are any different than what most people have heard. You need to first believe in yourself, know you will make mistakes and fail but learn from them, don't be afraid to ask for help, guidance, or advice from others. I would say step one for me, however, is to have a financial plan that mirrors your growth goals. Regardless if you are well-funded or bootstrapping your endeavor, have a plan for the money. Without a plan, you will find yourself overspending or not taking calculated risks that can launch you to another lever. Have a financial plan for your money.
