We are The Work-In, a space designed to fill your wellness needs holistically! We offer both live (virtually or in-person) and on-demand classes that can build team community or fill a content library. We provide wellness hacks for busy lifestyles via webinars or in-person sessions to corporate teams on many topics such as "Understanding Your Immune System," "Stress: What is it and How Can We Combat It," "How to Shop the Grocery Store, and Avoid the Marketing Scams," "Healthy Menu Hacks for Ordering Out," "Understanding Your Metabolism," "Why is Sleep So Important," and so many more. We are your business' one-stop shop for all things to promote healthy habits and move your body!

Tell us about yourself

As both an athlete and a Registered Nurse, Carter brings a unique knowledge base about the human body and how it works to the fitness and Corporate Wellness industries. She understands that rather than working independently, all of our body systems affect others and that making healthy choices for the total body is the key to wellness. A licensed Registered Nurse for over 15 years, Carter earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Virginia in 2006. Working in hospitals and high-risk clinics in Virginia and North Carolina taught Carter the principles and effects of disease processes and chronic disease and inflammation. With a specialization in Women's Health, Carter became particularly interested in the ability of exercise and movement along with healthy diet choices to mitigate the effects of chronic disease.

Carter continued work as a nurse and began exploring fitness as a second career. Her interest in helping people learn how to move their bodies flourished first as a fitness instructor and later as the Director of a club chain spanning several states. She led and developed a 700-person instructor team and created new programming for members with purposeful and intentional movement. She now builds programming for the up-and-coming club chain, Fuel Fitness. She writes content for IFTA, a certifying body for fitness trainers. Corporate Wellness was a natural next step for Carter. She enjoys bridging her medical and movement backgrounds to educate employees on important and timely topics that affect all aspects of wellness. She is a big believer in taking care of your body as a means to graceful aging and better quality of life throughout the lifespan.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am extremely proud to promote a healthier planet, one corner at a time. Each webinar, seminar, and class is a chance to reach people in a specific way and give them some real-life practical tips to help them on the path to a healthy lifestyle. Each touchpoint is an accomplishment and a meaningful connection!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult things is juggling needs across multiple time zones. Lunchtime for California is later in the day here on the East Coast, so making sure all requests are met while accounting for our own schedules can be a lot to handle sometimes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient! All of your hard work and connections will pay off.
  2. Be deliberate with your time. If you operate intentionally, you will maximize your potential.
  3. Create a mission statement, goals, and a plan. Be sure that everything that you do lives into that mission. If it doesn't fit, don't waste your time on it! Be great at just a few things (or one thing) instead of spreading yourself too thin.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be sure that you are having fun and enjoying the process!
