What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a small shop that sells yarn ranging from 100% wool to Alpaca to sock yarns and acrylics. Something for everyone. I also carry needles and crochet hooks.
Tell us about yourself
I have always knit but on a small scale. About five years ago, I learned how to crochet. Now it depends on the project that I do. I do prefer knitting tho. I retired from my full-time job. The opportunity came up for me to purchase The Wool Queen. I jumped at that and came out of retirement. I love passing on the love of creating with yarn and helping choose colours, and assisting the knitter who is not quite sure how.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I haven't owned the shop for long, but getting the store organized and knowing that the yarn I choose is also what people are looking for. Watching the awe on people's faces as they walk thru my door and all the colours and blends for the first time.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Not making everyone happy. Sometimes you have to say no. Choosing what to carry and not carry.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be organized.
- Set your policies and stick to them.
- Love what you do because your store hours are not your hours. There is no downtime.
