Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristy Arnholtz, founder of The Woodrack Cafe, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Woodrack Cafe is a quaint cafe located in the heart of Edmonton. Attracting customers from all walks of life. We even have a resident Grandpa that you'll find moseying around most mornings. We pride ourselves in sharing a safe space that is inclusive for everyone.
Tell us about yourself
The Woodrack Cafe came to life on a girl's weekend in the foothills of Alberta. The owners named their cafe after that very adventure. They were kayaking and collecting driftwood that was floating in the lake and put it on the racks of their kayak, hence, The Woodrack Rack. They both had a dream to work for themselves, so they thought no better time than the present. Their vision aligned and came together in no time. Our staff and community are what keep us going. And, of course, an amazing cup of our Moon Phase Coffee! Having a cafe is like being nestled in a giant hug, and we wouldn't change that feeling for anything. We all grow and help each other out, which is our daily dose of inspiration.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being in business for 8 years feels like quite an accomplishment. Our journey has had many twists and turns, yet we have pulled through and become stronger than we could have imagined. Not everyone would have been able to weather storms that we sailed, but our kayaks are still floating. We have successfully opened a couple of locations. Started our own Moon Phase Coffee Line, survived a pandemic and dialed in generational recipes for all to enjoy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time. There's always so much to do, learn, grow, update, try something new. Just Trust you will get it done when the time is right.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Never lose YOUR vision. Don't let outside influences tell you how to run your business. Stay true to your heart and your choices.
- Make work-life balance your priority. Work can get away at times but try to rein it in and remember a healthy you is a healthy work environment.
- Restaurant Cafe: Always lease equipment - especially a dishwasher.
